RECYCLING OF ALKALINE AND ZINC-CARBON BATTERIES

THE PROCESS

REVABAT® is a wet recycling process (hydrometallurgy) for alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries.
This process, developed by REVATECH, is used to recycle the magnetic (steel) and non-magnetic (zinc and brass) metal fractions, recycle the different components of the “black mass” (zinc, carbon and manganese), and reprocess the plastics.
The overall recycling rate is at least 55% of the gross weight of the batteries treated, and is well within the norms contemplated by the European Commission.

ADVANTAGES

REVABAT® is a wet process that does not create any problems of atmospheric emissions (volatile heavy metals, dioxins etc.).
REVABAT® tolerates the presence, in limited quantities, of button batteries (mercury batteries) and NiCad/NiH batteries in the batches of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries.
REVABAT® accepts batteries of all dimensions.
REVABAT® can be combined with other processes (pyro-metallurgy).

ALREADY ACHIEVED AND UNDER DEVELOPMENT

REVATECH currently recycles more than 3,000 tonnes annually of batteries from various origins (Luxembourg, France, Germany and others), including all the alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries collected in Belgium under the Bebat program. Other European countries – even those far beyond the borders of the EU – are progressively introducing policies for compulsory collection and recycling of batteries. REVATECH is ready to respond to this development: it already has operating permits enabling it to recycle 10,000 tonnes of batteries per year.
